Wind turbines for the future
The wind energy group has made significant progress in the past year by designing and building the electrical system for a new floating offshore wind technology; the first prototype of the 30 kW Counter Rotating Axis Floating Tilted ‘CRAFT’- turbine, as well as publishing papers in top journals and conferences.
Research topics include: Aerodynamics of dual turbine concept with a relatively close distance between rotors; Material aspects of wood tower for offshore wind turbines; New controllers and algorithms for the CRAFT turbine, and; Novel design and new manufacturing methods for an efficient 40 MW generator.
Research is also done on modeling of permanent magnets and design of novel electrical machines without rare earth metals.
The group's research is advancing the development of more efficient, reliable, and cost-effective wind turbines and is expected to have a significant impact on the wind energy industry in the future.
