Smart geophysical exploration for fossil-free energy systems

Placeholder

We conduct research on Earth's interior through geophysical measurements from the surface, in boreholes, and in mines. For fossil-free energy systems, we focus on developing innovative solutions within two main areas of smart exploration: critical raw materials essential for battery production, wind and solar, and geothermal energy production and storage for heating/cooling and preserving electricity for other usages. Accurate site characterization is key for a deeper understanding of subsurface structures and their physical and mechanical properties. We also conduct research on nuclear waste and CO2 storage.

We apply new technologies for geophysical surveying, for example by monitoring vibrations using Distributed Acoustic Sensing (DAS) and the Riksriggen national infrastructure. Geophysics involves analysis of large datasets, including machine learning techniques. We foster collaborations within the department and university, and with extarnal partners.
