Electrical machines and drives for electrification across applications

Luca

Our research area deals with the modelling, design, and control of electrical machines and drives for electrification across applications, ranging from industry to transportation and renewable energy. Our main drive is that electrification must be achieved through less energy-intensive processes; therefore, the work focuses on machines and drives with energy efficiency as the primary goal. Reliability at the design stage and health status monitoring during operation are also essential to complete the picture, because a process with unreliable electrical machines and drives will be energy-intensive.

Electrification also raises serious questions about sustainability and supply chains that are free from political and economic threats. For this reason, our research focuses on minimizing the use of critical and strategic materials, such as permanent magnets based on rare-earth elements. Alternatives to copper as a primary conductor are also a long-term goal.
